A legend calls it quits on a remarkable career.

Eddie Betts. Oh Eddie Betts.
Where do I begin? What can I say? A lot actually but let’s narrow it down to just a few words, okay.
News broke earlier in the week that you sir, will be hanging up the boots at seasons end. After a superb career, you’ll run out to play your final match this weekend, round 23, game 350 at the age of 34. You have achieved so much and continue to strive for success. You are an inspiration to so many people and for future generations to come. You inspire those with your freakishly silky skills, mesmerising crowds and commentators for days. Kicking goals from deep inside the pocket, how does he do it? Only Eddie knows.
I remember one in particular occasion. In 2019, Adelaide vs. Richmond, it was round 13 in the 20th minute of the final quarter. Veteran vs. amateur. Betts vs. an inexperienced Sydney Stack. The no.18 side steps to the right, swings his right foot, slicing the perfect banana between the two inner sticks. Pumping his chest to the crowd as they bow down to their king, he turns and points his finger at Stack, shaking his head as if to say “Looky here boy, don’t be cheeky. That’s has it’s done, son” It’s such a joy to observe such talent. It puts bums in sits and smiles on faces. You’ll forever be etched in the forefront of spectator’s memories.
The AFL community bids farewell to a legend of the game. A true immortal and a certainty to don the Hall of Fame blazer, I count on it. You’ll be sorely missed. I don’t know how the AFL commentary team across the Australian sporting community are going to cope without your name reverberating around the ground. I forever have Bruce McAvaney yelling those famous words in the back of my mind, “oh Ed-die Betts.”
I am honoured to have witnessed such greatness on and off the field. I wish you all the very best for the future. Thank you for everything you have contributed to the game both on and off the field.
Eddie, we salute you.
